Smyth-sewn binding: signatures sewn and cased

Smyth-sewn binding, also called section-sewn binding, sews thread through the fold of each signature and loops it into the stitching of the signature before it, then reinforces the assembled, sewn block with adhesive before it goes under a covered spine.

Typically used for: Printing Partners' Smyth-sewn page lists textbooks, journals, premium publications and heirloom or keepsake volumes as typical candidates, the kind of book opened and referenced again and again over a long life.

  • Thread visible along the inside fold at the center of each signature when the book is opened wide.
  • Folded signatures nested one inside another rather than loose single sheets stacked flat.
  • A covered, reinforced spine that hides the thread and its adhesive backing from view.

What moves when it opens

Because each signature carries its own line of thread, the sewn block flexes at every fold rather than along one continuous glued edge.

The reinforcing adhesive strengthens that sewn block without replacing the thread as the actual joining mechanism; it's a support layer, not the primary bond.

The covered spine hinges as a single reinforced unit, with the thread and its adhesive backing hidden from view the whole time the book is open.

Advantage Bookbinding's guide says a Smyth-sewn book still lies flat years after it was bound and its pages resist falling out over that time; Printing Partners puts that same book's durability at up to thousands of openings.

    Perfect binding

    Smyth-sewn's thread lets each signature flex on its own fold; perfect binding's spine, glued as a single unit with no folds inside it, can't. Both still finish under a covered, printable spine, which is exactly why they're mistaken for each other.

    Smyth-sewn's stitched signatures and lay-flat's floating cover liner solve the same problem, opening well, in unrelated ways: one sews through every fold, the other lets the cover spine move independently of the text block.

Background: Smyth-sewn binding is named for David McConnell Smyth, an Irish American inventor who turned from machines that sewed cloth and shoes to machines that could sew books, patented his first book-sewing machine in 1868, and later replaced straight needles with curved ones that could stitch each signature to the one before it.

Is Smyth-sewn the same as section-sewn?

Yes, in trade usage. Section-sewn names the same sewn-signature construction whether the sewing is done by hand or by machine; Smyth-sewn is the machine form of it, and the sewing itself does not change with the label. How is Smyth sewing different from hand sewing?

Smyth sewing is machine sewing: a hook-needle draws thread up through each signature's fold and through the loop left by the signature sewn before it. Hand sewing follows that same fold-and-loop logic, just guided by a person instead of a machine.

Yes.
