What moves when it opens
The posts hold the whole stack rigid at the punched holes, so pages pivot only around that fixed zone rather than opening the way a spine-based binding does.
Getting the book to open well near that edge takes deliberate preparation, scoring the pages and leaving a small hinge gap in the cover, not something the posts do on their own.
Because the posts unscrew, the whole stack can be taken apart at that same fixed zone, which is the trade-off for the restricted opening.

Frequently asked questions
Can you add or remove pages after screw-post binding?
Yes. The two-piece posts unscrew, so pages can be added, removed or reordered and the posts threaded back through the same holes afterward. That's why screw-post binding suits documents that get revised again and again, sample books and presentations among them. Nothing about the covers or the punched holes has to change for this; only the post itself comes apart and goes back together around the stack.
Why doesn't a screw-post book open fully near the spine?
Bookbinder Suharu Ogawa's notes give the fix a specific measure: scoring the pages about an inch from the bound edge and leaving a quarter-inch hinge gap in the cover before threading the posts through. Without that preparation, the rigid posts clamp the stack tight at the punched holes, and pages can only pivot as far as that fixed zone allows before the clamped hardware stops them.
Is a screw-post document the same as a comb-bound one?
No. Both punch holes through a stack of loose sheets and expose hardware along the edge, but comb's molded plastic tines pry open by hand for re-editing, while screw-post's two-piece posts need actual unscrewing before pages can be added or removed.
