Which book bindings lay flat (open flat)?

Seven of the eleven bindings here lay flat: Coptic, Smyth-sewn, lay-flat, spiral, Wire-O, comb and pamphlet stitch. Saddle stitch comes nearly flat, screw-post opens only part way, and perfect binding and Japanese stab binding do not open flat. "Lay flat" and "open flat" mean the same thing here. What "opens flat" means here

Every diagram on this site moves through the same handful of curated positions: closed, partway open, and however far a method's own sources say it comfortably goes. "Opens flat" describes that farthest position, not a measured angle, because none of the accounts behind this project actually measures one.

That judgment comes from whoever wrote the bindery guide or craft note for a given method, not from one shared test every source runs, so the four answers sorted below (flat, nearly flat, partially flat, not flat) are only as consistent as the accounts reporting them, each paired with the structural reason a source gives for it.

Seven that flatten

The ones that lie flat

Three of the seven get there by sewing through an actual fold instead of gluing anything shut. Pamphlet stitch and Coptic binding both skip adhesive entirely, so a single signature, or several tied to one another station by station, has nothing but thread resisting the crease, and the fold simply gives. Smyth-sewn keeps that same fold logic but wraps it in a covered, glue-reinforced spine; the reinforcement stiffens the outside without ever replacing the thread as what actually lets each signature flex.

The other three route metal through a punched row instead of a fold, and two of them go further than merely flat: a single coil in spiral binding and the paired loops of Wire-O both let every page spin on its own, so neither one stops at flat, it keeps rotating until the covers meet behind the block. Comb uses that same punched-row idea, but its tines form one molded ring rather than loose hardware, so pages only turn part of the way around it, still enough for the stack to settle flat, just not enough for a full turn.

Lay-flat binding reaches the same flat result from a completely different direction, with no sewing or exposed hardware at all. Its cover is glued to a liner that never touches the text block's own spine, so the two spines flex apart from each other instead of fighting as one bonded piece, which is exactly the fight that keeps a directly-glued cover from lying flat.

Four that resist

The ones that don't, and why

Perfect binding and Japanese stab binding both land on no, for opposite structural reasons. Perfect binding's spine is one continuous run of adhesive with no fold or stitch anywhere inside it to pivot on, so the whole piece has to bend as a single stiff unit and stops well short of flat. Japanese stab binding carries no adhesive at all, but its thread wraps around a solid margin set back from the true edge rather than passing through a fold, so the stack pivots at that sewn line and gets no closer to flat than the margin allows.

Screw-post binding answers partially: its rigid two-piece posts clamp a fixed zone near the edge, and pages pivot only as far past that zone as careful scoring and a cover hinge gap allow, real movement but a limited one. Saddle stitch sits closest to flat of this group without quite reaching it: a thin, nested booklet swings open right at its stapled fold with almost nothing pushing back, but once enough signatures nest inside one another the block gets too bulky to press flush, so how near a given booklet gets to flat depends on its own page count rather than on the staples themselves.

A separate axis

Fold-back is a different question

Lying flat and folding all the way back are two separate facts about a binding. Coptic, Smyth-sewn, lay-flat and pamphlet stitch all open flat, yet none of them fold back on themselves: a sewn or glued fold can flex open without ever letting the covers travel past that point to meet behind the block. Comb sits in between, its ringed spine allowing only a limited fold-back, enough to settle flat but not enough for a full turn.

Spiral and Wire-O are the only two methods here where both answers come back yes, because their hardware lets each page rotate on its own instead of merely flexing at a shared fold or a glued edge. Everything else on this page that opens flat does so without that independent rotation, which is exactly why a flat answer alone never tells the whole story.

Naming

Lay-flat the attribute vs lay-flat the binding

Lay-flat binding, the specific method on this site also called Otabind after the company that originated it, is only one of the seven ways to reach a flat-opening book: the one built around a cover liner that floats free of the text block's own spine. The same word gets used loosely for the broader result too, which is why a spiral notebook, a Coptic sketchbook, or a Smyth-sewn hardcover can each get called something that lies flat without any of them sharing lay-flat binding's floating-liner construction.

"Opens flat" names the attribute sorted row by row in the table above, while "lay-flat binding," and Otabind alongside it, stay reserved for the one construction among the eleven that earns that name structurally rather than just by outcome.

Which binding opens the flattest?

Seven of the eleven land on a full yes: Coptic, Smyth-sewn, lay-flat, spiral, Wire-O, comb and pamphlet stitch. Spiral and Wire-O go a step past the rest of that group, since their hardware also lets each page rotate on its own until the covers meet behind the block, not merely lie flat.

Does a saddle-stitched booklet lie flat?

Nearly, but not quite flat. A thin booklet swings open right at its stapled fold with barely any resistance, but once enough signatures nest inside one another the block gets too thick to press flush, so a fatter saddle-stitched booklet won't lie quite as flat as a thin one, even though nothing about the staples themselves has changed.

Why doesn't a book that opens flat always fold back on itself?

Because those are two different questions about the same book. Opening flat only asks how far the pages travel before they stop; folding back asks whether the covers can keep going until they meet behind the block. Coptic, Smyth-sewn, lay-flat and pamphlet stitch all answer flat and no on those two questions at once, since their folds or floating covers let pages flex open without offering the independent, page-by-page rotation a full fold-back needs.

Is lay-flat the same thing as opens flat?

Not quite. Lay-flat, and its named example Otabind, refers to one specific construction with a floating cover liner. Opens flat, the attribute this page sorts by, is broader: six other methods reach that same result through sewing or exposed hardware instead, none of them built as lay-flat binding.
