Lay-flat binding (Otabind is the original named example) bonds the cover to a separate flexible liner and leaves that liner free of the text-block spine, so the two spines can move independently while the text block itself is consolidated with cold glue and gauze.

Typically used for: Printing Partners lists manuals, cookbooks, workbooks and reference books as typical lay-flat candidates, products that need a softcover shelf look but must still lie flat in use.
- A square, printable spine that looks just like perfect binding's when the book is closed.
- A visible gap or hinge where the cover's spine separates from the text-block spine as the book opens.
- A liner that carries the cover but stops short of the text-block spine, with no glue bridging the two.
- No staples, thread, or wire visible either, the same absence of hardware a perfect-bound book shows when closed.

What moves when it opens
Because the cover's liner isn't glued to the text-block spine, the cover can hinge open on its own without dragging the text block's spine along with it.
The two spines, cover liner and text block, separate visibly as the book opens, flexing apart rather than moving as one bonded piece.
That decoupling is what lets the book open flat without the cracking risk a directly-glued cover carries.
The book does not fold back on itself the way spiral or Wire-O pages can, even though it opens completely flat: the covers stay where they are rather than doubling around behind the text block.

Lay-flat is better understood as an attribute several constructions can achieve than as one single method: some builds sew the text block, others leave it unsewn, and some still grind the spine folds off the way a standard perfect binding does.
Printing Partners' own Otabind table calls the construction not as rugged as a hardcover case, even though its floating spine also lets it open flat.

Printing Partners' guide notes that lay-flat construction costs more than a standard perfect-bound book and needs enough pages to build a spine.
