Spiral vs. comb vs. Wire-O binding

Spiral, comb and Wire-O binding all push hardware through the same punched row, but what fills it differs: a coil winds through every hole at once, a molded comb spine forms one solid ring, and paired wire loops close hole by hole. That decides how far each folds and whether it reopens. Spiral and coil name the same continuous-helix binding.

  • One continuous coil, an unbroken strand of plastic or metal, threads through every punched hole along the edge.
  • Hole shape varies by manufacturer's die: both round and oval punches show up in commercial spiral binding.
  • There's no limit on how far it opens: the two covers can keep rotating past flat until they land back to back around the coil.
  • Next to comb or Wire-O, look for the coil: one strand runs through the whole row at once, unlike comb's separate molded ring or the paired loops Wire-O closes hole by hole.

Structure

One coil, one molded ring, two wire loops

Spiral, comb and Wire-O all put something through a punched row along one edge of the stack, but what actually threads through that row differs at the hole level. Spiral relies on a single strand: one coil winds its way in, hole after hole, until a bindery locks both ends shut so the strand can't work loose again. Wire-O works the opposite way, closing an individual pair of wires into a round loop at each opening, so the row ends up as a chain of separate closures rather than one strand. Comb skips loose strands entirely, since its tines grow out of one molded bar, so the whole spine arrives, and later leaves, as a single cast piece rather than something assembled hole by hole.

All three still keep that hardware sitting out in the open at the spine, not tucked under a cover, and the hole shape milled into the stack changes with the method: spiral's holes run round or oval, the die used for Wire-O can cut square, round or rectangular openings, and comb needs the wider rectangular cut its flat tines demand.

Opening and fold-back

Two rotate all the way around; one stops partway

Spiral and Wire-O share the same ceiling: nothing stops either one from turning a complete circle, so the front and back covers can meet behind the block with the hardware still fully exposed between them. Spiral gets there because every page answers only to the coil, spinning independently of its neighbors; Wire-O reaches the same point by a different route, its paired loops staying loose enough at each hole that the whole stack still turns freely around them.

Comb never reaches that same point. Its tines form one continuous ring rather than a loose strand, so a page can tip open against its neighbor but the stack can't complete the turn; the leaves crowd unevenly against their neighbors near the fore-edge instead, and the book settles flat rather than folding back on itself the way the other two do.

Editing after binding

Only the comb spine reopens by hand

Comb is the one binding of this trio built to be undone. Its molded tines can be splayed apart by hand well after the original binding is finished, so a sheet slides out or a fresh one slides in without buying new hardware, then the same tines close back around the thicker or thinner stack. Spiral and Wire-O both close that door for good: spiral's coil is sealed shut once threading finishes, and Wire-O closes its paired loops by squeezing them round through the punched row, so in neither case does a bindery expect to open it again.

Terminology

Same-looking hardware, different names

Two of these three names aren't as distinct as they sound. Print shops and craft suppliers use 'spiral' and 'coil' for one identical binding, so a listing that says coil binding and a listing that says spiral binding are describing the same continuous strand, not two different products.

'Wire-O' looks like a plain description but it names one specific product, so this guide reaches for it only when naming that product and uses the neutral phrase double-loop wire everywhere else. Comb carries its own extra branding: the same ringed spine sells under the trade names Cerlox and Surelox as well as under its generic description, so a spine stamped with either word is still ordinary comb binding underneath.

What to look for at the spine

Look for continuity on spiral: trace the strand with a finger and it runs the full length of the row without a single gap or seam, round or oval holes alike.

Wire-O looks different up close. The row turns out to be made of individual closed loops, paired at every hole, and the one place the spine actually finishes, its closing seam, hides under the edge of the back cover rather than sitting in plain view.

Comb is the easiest to spot by silhouette: one molded bar of curved fingers fills a run of noticeably wider, rectangular openings, and the facing pages sit slightly proud of each other rather than lying flush, evidence that the stack only partly turns around that solid ring.

Wire-O vs spiral

Wire-O vs spiral binding: paired loops or one helix

Look at what happens to a single hole and the two mechanisms diverge in a way the whole-row view hides. A Wire-O loop is closed shut, one hole at a time, by a machine that squeezes each paired wire round on its own, so that hole's closure never depends on what the rest of the row is doing. Spiral instead threads one shared strand through every hole in sequence, so no single hole gets its own closure; the whole coil is what's crimped, right at both ends, not each opening along the way.

That difference carries into the open book as well as the closed one. Every page on the Wire-O row still answers to its own closed loop, while a page on the spiral side answers to the same shared coil as every other page in the row. Either way, nothing stops the covers from continuing to rotate until they meet behind the block in a full fold-back.
